Two measurements, two rates

Measure away from the swatch edges. Count partial stitches or rows when they land inside your measured span.

Why the chart changes shape

Square cells are an editing convention

At 4 stitches and 4.5 rows per inch, one stitch is wider than one row is tall. A circle drawn on square graph cells needs a physical preview before you assume it will remain circular in fabric.

The expected cell width-to-height ratio is 4.5 ÷ 4 = 1.125.

  • Make the swatch larger than the area you measure.
  • Wash or block it the way the finished item will be treated.
  • Measure the center without stretching the fabric.

Count over a stable center area

Reliable crochet gauge for a graph starts with a swatch larger than the measured window. Edge stitches, foundation tension, and turning chains can differ from the middle of the fabric.
